Google SEO and HTTPS

Google SEO and HTTPSSmall business owners understand that their web site position in Google is very important. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is important for maximum exposure but it is not easy and can be expensive to outsource.

Google has recently announced that it will be favouring HTTPS web sites. Now why is this important? Well it is because most business owners will not use HTTPS on a web site or even know what it is.

HTTPS, or its full name of “Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer <phew>”, is what is used to secure web sites. It is used on banking and eCommerce sites or when maximum security is required. It basically encrypts the data so the data (like passwords) cannot be intercepted.

This change is a double edged sword. On one hand it provides better data protection, but on the other, it can slow web sites down due to the additional encryption process. Also, web owners need to purchase a “HTTPS Certificate” and install it. These can range from £10 to £250 upwards plus installation.
