Millions of people are currently being asked to work remotely, and if you are new to working from home, you may find yourself a bit lost on where to start. While some love being able to work in the comforts of their home, others may find it difficult and full of distractions not encountered in an office setting. We’ve got a few tips on how to work from home effectively in a way that keeps productivity up and distractions out
Nothing will prepare you more for working from home than with a dedicated workspace. This should be somewhere you can be comfortable, but not anywhere too relaxing, like from your bed. Don’t feel the need to turn a room into an office, but simply separate your work area away from your normal rest areas the best you can. Setting up a spot on the dining room table is a popular choice.
Being able to work in pyjamas sounds great, but it doesn’t put us in the right mood for work.
Getting dressed will help get you prepared psychologically and put you in the right mindset to tackle the workday ahead.
Start and end your workday at the same time you normally would as best as possible. Not only are these the hours you’re adjusted to working to, but it keeps those work/life boundaries for yourself and others. Have a plan on what needs to be done that day and be sure to stick to your usual work hours when tackling that to-do list.
While keeping to a work schedule is ideal, that doesn’t mean you should feel glued to the spot all day. For both your physical and mental wellbeing, it is recommended that you take regular short breaks and get moving. Stand up, stretch, do a quick workout, make a brew – anything that gets you away from your screen. These regular breaks help get our muscles moving and prevents burnout. It will also boost productivity!
It is easy to become distracted at home, especially if you have kids and other family members at home with you. Noise-cancelling headphones are great at helping you stay focused. These are also handy for those important conference calls.
Even in these times where it is recommended to stay home, working from home can be a big change for many, and feel even more isolating and lonely. Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone sometimes to check in with co-workers. You may also choose to chat regularly through a specific platform too, like Microsoft Teams or Slack.
